Hi Fletch the cameras conform to PoE 802.AF standard and as such are happy on most PoE switches. Depending on the camera model the consumption is typically less than 6 watts per camera so hopefully this is useful in your selection of a suitable switch as both of the options you mention should be suitable?

I figured it out myself. You need to click the Edit button against each channel and set the Switch Mode to "Manual" instead of "Auto". Now I can add the cameras.

Thanks for letting the community know how you went. As you found, the NVR defaults to Auto which as expected easily discovers and configures cameras connected to the back of the NVR but cannot detect cameras on the network. If you switch to manual as you have done, it is still semi-automatic as you can then search the network for your other cameras and just enter the password to connect them.

I feel like a dummy now.  I wired 14 cameras direct to two difference NVR's.  I did not realize I only needed to hook them into the network - and nearly every room is already wired for ethernet.  Now I want to buy more cameras and put them in even MORE places  :)

I'm assuming all I need is a POE switch to connect them to?  Any brand suggestions?

Doh! At least you realised eventually. Personally, I use TP-Link. Make sure it's a Gigabit to support all that data traffic!

A quick look shows the power supplied by various POE switches varies quite a bit - from 14 (Netgear) to 30 (TP-Link) watts per port.  I can't find any material that list the power requirements of the Swann cameras.

Looking at the power adaptor that comes with one of the non-POE cameras, the output on that adapter maxes out at 55 watts - so the camera obviously consumes less that that.

I'm guessing POE+ would be a minimum requirement from looking at this - https://community.fs.com/blog/understanding-poe-standards-and-poe-wattage.html

James C - thanks for that info!  Indeed both of the switches I'm considering would work, with power to spare.
