Before you can get the camera to stop recording false motion, you need to identify what is causing the camera to record. The following are common triggers:
- The PIR sensor can detect warm objects outside of the camera’s field of view, so not everything that triggers the sensor will be visible on your camera. For example, heating vents, heaters, or other heat sources. Relocate cameras from these heat sources to reduce false triggers.
- Cameras with PIR sensors can pick up heat from non-human objects within the field of view as well. For example, trees or swaying objects under sunlight. Relocate cameras from these heat sources or set the camera to detect Motion instead of PIR to avoid false triggers.
- Electrical noise such as random variations from nearby electronic devices and equipment (e.g. generators) can cause false triggers. The only solution is to relocate the camera away from those electronic devices / equipment.
- Loose mounting areas such as a plank of wood or a tree branch can fool cameras into thinking there is movement. Swann cameras do not have gyro sensors, but it will detect changes in camera view as movement. Ensure that the location, mounts, and camera screws are tightened to secure unwanted movement.
- Sunlight shining directly at the lens of the camera can trigger recordings as well as damage your camera in the long run. The ideal position of the camera is 7-8 feet high and pointing downwards at an angle to cover the area where people will be walking across the camera’s path.
