Swann Recorders Hardware Noises - What does it mean?
Swann Recorders, like any other electronics with active components, can produce audible noise at different levels. Depending on the type of device, the noise level can vary from normal to very loud, which can be distracting in a quiet environment. While noises coming from the internal fan or hard drive (HDD) are normal, some abnormal sounds may be a sign of hardware failure.
To better understand the noise coming from your device, please watch the video below and compare it to the noise produced by your unit. Make sure you have speakers or a headset to hear to the audio.

The timestamps below illustrate the kind of noise your recorder can produce:
- Normal fan noise (00:05)
- Fan noise issue (00:15)
- Hard drive (HDD) noise issue (00:25 - 00:35)
- Other unusual noise issue (00:45 - 00:52)
Normal fan noise
Description:
-
- This sound is produced by DVRs or NVRs with active cooling.
- The sound is faint.
- Usually only audible when up-close.
Note: The below conditions may cause the recorder to generate louder than the usual noise level (fan is working harder).
-
- The recorder is busy recording clips, especially in a 24/7 operation or a very busy environment. This is necessary to keep the electronic components cool.
- Location where the recorder is placed (e.g. inside an enclosed cabinet or tight space or on top of a platform that vibrates or not fixed/stable). We recommend putting your recorder in an open space on a stable platform or bench.
- Air vents are blocked. Make sure the air vents are always clean and not clogged for better airflow.
Fan noise issue
Description:
-
- The noise is loud and can be heard from a distance.
- Sounds like a saw in an inconsistently oscillating vibration pattern.
- The fan is working really hard and sometimes an audible clicking sound is heard as if the fan fins are hitting something.
What to do: If your recorder is producing this loud fan noise, please check if the air vents are clogged which can be a sign of a clogged fan fins as well. Clean or vacuum the vents and fan and check the noise level again. If cleaning the fan is not possible and your device is still under warranty, please contact our Tech Support team.
HDD noise issue
Description:
-
- The sound is similar to an inkjet printer.
- Brief scratching sound ending with a click.
- Sporadic clicking sound or HDD led is off (Led light next to the Power led light) while the unit is powered on.
What to do: This is a sign of the failing or already failed HDD. If your device is under warranty or you need help with a replacement spare part, please contact our Tech Support team.
Other unusual noise issue
Description:
-
- Extremely loud or high-pitched noise.
- Continuous beep.
What to do: This is a sign of the failing or already failed HDD. If your device is under warranty or you need help with a replacement spare part, please contact our Tech Support team.
