There are different types of standalone cameras:

Indoor cameras can be placed on a flat surface without the need to drill and then screw to mount. It can also be mounted on a ceiling, or walls as long as there's a platform for it stand or mounted.
If the a pan & tilt camera is mounted to high, it will have difficulty to point down based on how it was designed. Best to mount it on a ceiling instead. - Outdoor cameras have no problem being mounted on a ceiling or under eaves.
- Floodlight cameras are ideally mounted on a wall. It can be on a ceiling, but the camera angle will be too limited.
- Cameras with integrated solar-panel (SWIFI-SESOL2KBC) is best used outside and exposed to the sun, albeit you can still mount it indoors if you like
