There are scenarios where connecting your NHD cameras directly to your NVR recorder over a long distance is not ideal, or perhaps you have a centralized LAN cabling system terminated in a location away from your recorder. This is where a PoE switch becomes useful.
Read below to learn how to wire your NHD cameras to a PoE switch connected to the same network (and subnet) as your NVR.
Important PoE Facts
- Using an external PoE switch will NOT increase the number of cameras your NVR will support. For example, if you have an 8-channel NVR and already have 4 cameras connected to it and you want to use a PoE switch elsewhere, you can only connect up to 4 cameras to make a total of 8
- Like other wired security cameras, our Swann Security (NHD) Cameras support Power over Ethernet (PoE) connection where data and power are transmitted via a single cable.
- Swann Security (NHD) Cameras support the PoE 802.3af standard.
- The 48V output of PoE is designed to accommodate any voltage loss across the maximum length allowable for an Ethernet cable (10/100/1000Mbps).
DISCLAIMER: Our technical support is limited to Swann cameras directly connected to the NVR only. Due to the complexity of networking, we cannot provide assistance with connectivity issues related to PoE-connected cameras.
Swann NVR systems work best when cameras are connected directly to the recorder. This setup reduces points of failure and has no impact on streaming quality when viewed locally, especially for high-definition (HD) or 4K cameras, due to bandwidth requirements.

Setting up your NVR:
- Login to your recorder and navigate to Setup > Display > IP Channels screen.
- Click on the Edit pencil icon next to a channel that is available or not assigned to an IP camera.

- Change the Switch Mode of that channel from Auto to Manual. Hit Ok to save the changes.
NOTE: Repeat steps 2 and 3 if you are adding more cameras.
- Under the IP Channels screen, click the Search button. The NVR will now search the network for any Swann IP cameras connected to that network. If all goes well, it will list them on the IP channels menu
screen.

- Click the Add All button. The NVR will add those cameras on the network to its list of POE channels and assign them a channel number.
