Recorder or Standalone Camera Not Recording? Here’s How to Fix It
If your security recorder or standalone camera is not recording, the issue is usually caused by incorrect settings, storage problems, sensor limitations, or hardware failure. Common signs include missing recordings, motion events not being saved, or playback showing no video history.
This guide explains the fastest ways to fix a recorder or security camera that stopped recording.
Common Causes
Here are the most common reasons a recorder or camera will not record:
- Recording settings are disabled
- Motion detection settings are incorrect
- The PIR sensor cannot detect movement properly
- No storage device is installed
- The hard drive or microSD card is faulty
- The recorder or camera hardware has failed
Before you proceed, choose what system or device do you have:
Things to Prepare
- The recorder or camera is powered on
- The device is connected properly
- A monitor and mouse are connected to the recorder if needed
- You can access the device settings
- A microSD card or hard drive is installed
- The camera firmware is updated
Step-by-Step Fixes
Verify Motion Detection or PIR Sensor Settings
Things to know:
- Some cameras have PIR sensor to detect infrared (heat) radiation; it is used in tandem with the camera sensor to reduce false trigger
- PIR sensor can detect heat outside the camera's field of view
- PIR sensor don't work well if placed behind a glass or if the heat is too far
- Some system uses Analytics or AI to determine if the detected movement is from a human or vehicle
For DVR, NVR, SecureAlert™, AllSecure, AdvancedX™, and MaxRanger4K™ Power Hub, here are the settings you need to configure:
-
Set a Detection Mode - Go to Menu > Alarm > Detection and make sure the channel's Mode is NOT
Disabled -
Set a sensitivity - Make sure its value is anything EXCEPT
0 - Set a detection area - Cover the area with red box if you want to detect movements there. Check each cameras
For MaxRanger4K™ Base Station, here are the settings you need to configure:
-
Set a Detection Mode - Open Swann Security app, choose a and a camera to configure, and make sure that (Detection) Mode is
not Disabled -
Set a sensitivity - On the same settings, make sure none of the sensitivities is
not set to 0% - Set a detection area - Go to the camera's settings then . Cover the area with red box if you want to detect movements there.
For EliteX™ that is NOT PAIRED to Swann Security, here are the settings you need to configure:
-
Enable Motion Detection - Go to Configuration > Event Detection > Normal Events and make sure the channel is
Enabled -
Set a sensitivity - Under Area tab, make sure its value is anything EXCEPT
0 - Set a detection area - Cover the area with red box if you want to detect movements there. Check each cameras
- Set arming schedule - Under Arming Schedule tab, make sure to mark it BLUE on a time that you want the camera to detect movements. No color means it won't detect movements.
For EliteX™ that is PAIRED to Swann Security, here are the settings you need to configure if you camera is set to record when there is movement:
-
Set a Detection Mode - Open Swann Security app, choose a and a camera to configure, and make sure that (Detection) Mode is
not Disabled -
Set a sensitivity - On the same settings, make sure that the sensitivity is
not set to 0% -
Set a detection area - Go to the camera's settings then
Cover the area with red box if you want to detect movements there.
For standalone cameras, here are the settings you need to configure:
-
Set a sensitivity - Open Swann Security app, choose a and a camera to configure, and make sure its sensitivity is
not set to OFF or 0 - Set a detection area - Go to the camera's settings then . Cover the area with red box if you want to detect movements there.

Restart the Recorder or Camera
Restarting refreshes temporary system issues.
For DVR, NVR, SecureAlert™, AllSecure, AdvancedX™, and MaxRanger4K™ Power Hub that is NOT PAIRED to Swann Security, the proper way to reboot it is to go to Shutdown > Reboot; otherwise, you can unplug it for 5 to 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
For MaxRanger4K™ Power Hub, remove its backup battery if it has one.
For MaxRanger4K™ Base Station and standalone cameras, and even MaxRanger4K™ Power Hub and EliteX™ (PAIRED to Swann Security), you can reboot them via the Swann Security app by going to device's settings > Advance > Reboot
For EliteX™ that is NOT PAIRED to Swann Security, the proper way to reboot is by clicking the Power icon at the top-right, then select Reboot then ; otherwise, you can unplug it for 5 to 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
Restore Default Settings
If everything else fails to make your system record, factory resetting is your last option.
For DVR, NVR, SecureAlert™, AllSecure, AdvancedX™, and MaxRanger4K™ Power Hub that is NOT PAIRED to Swann Security, go to Menu > Advanced > Maintain and click
"Record" and "Alarm" are relevant to the issue, but you can still try to reset everything too.
For MaxRanger4K™ Base Station and standalone cameras, and even MaxRanger4K™ Power Hub and EliteX™ (PAIRED to Swann Security), you can factory reset them via the Swann Security app by going to device's settings > Advance > Factory Reset
Do not unpair your device

For EliteX™ that is NOT PAIRED to Swann Security, go to Maintenance > Restore and click
Why This Happens
Recording problems are common because security systems rely on multiple components working together, including motion detection, recording schedules, storage devices, and hardware. Incorrect settings, storage failure, or weak motion detection can stop recordings even when the camera appears online. Regular maintenance and firmware updates help prevent future issues.
Related Questions
Why is my security camera not detecting motion?
The motion sensitivity may be too low, or the target may be outside the PIR sensor range.
Why does my recorder say no hard drive detected?
The hard drive may be disconnected, damaged, or incompatible.
Why is my camera online but not recording?
Recording settings, schedules, or storage problems are usually the cause.
How do I reset my security recorder?
Open the system settings menu and select Factory Reset or Load Default.
Why are motion events missing?
The camera may not detect movement consistently due to distance, angle, or environmental conditions.
Summary
If your recorder or standalone camera is not recording, first check the recording settings, motion detection configuration, and storage device health. Most recording issues are caused by incorrect setup or faulty storage rather than complete hardware failure.
